The West Virginia Farm Bureau's Mobile Lab visited Spanishburg School this week, April 8th -12th. The 46-foot Lab is a fully self-contained unit equipped with multiple research stations. A retired teacher guided student while they conducted hands-on experiments and activities designed to meet the WV Department of Education Next Generation content standards. Students learned about the importance of agriculture in everyday living. Each day during the week-long visit, the student attended a 30-minute or 60-minute learning session. The favorite lesson was "Glue from Milk" where the students made glue and compared it to commercial glue and making butter. Spanishburg School would like to thank Mercer County Commision, Mercer County Farm Bureau especially Ethal and Frank Nash, Shirley Miller Chairman of the Women's Committee, Eli Tersterman, President Paul Canterbury, Tammy Bowling, Josie Lester from Mercer County Farm Bureau, County Commissioners Bill Archer and Gene Buckner and retired teacher Melissia Lamb.

The Mercer County Technical Education Center's Grow Your Own students participated in a teaching panel today at the Milken Educators' Forum in Charleston. These students are unique in that they will graduate with their Associate's Degree next month. After graduating from high school, they will move on to finish their teaching degrees. The Grow Your Own students who participated are Adrianne Jarrell, Erika Colley, Dexter Simon, and Teylah Carson. Also present at the forum were the Grow Your Own instructor Les Farmer and Mercer County's very own Milken Award recipients, Princeton Primary School's principal Kelli Stanley and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ernie Adkins. This is a fantastic program giving students interested in a career in education a jump start on their college credits which saves money and allows them to being their teaching careers earlier. Check out the Grow Your Own program at MCTEC!
