Last summer, Mercer County Schools received such an amazing response to our Summer Learning Spotlight campaign that we're bringing it back for Summer 2026!

Mercer County Schools is proud to announce that three schools have been selected to receive funding through the 2026 Be ActiveWV Grant Program, administered by the Center for ActiveWV at West Virginia University. Each school will receive a $10,000 grant in recognition of their active participation in the Healthy Schools in Action Project and their commitment to increasing physical activity opportunities for students.
🏆 Congratulations to:
✅ Oakvale Elementary School – $10,000 Grant Award
✅ Mountain Valley Elementary School – $10,000 Grant Award
✅ Montcalm High School – $10,000 Grant Award
These funds will help our schools enhance opportunities for students to be active throughout the school day and beyond, supporting healthier lifestyles and improved student wellness. The grants will be used to develop walking trails that will be designated as "Mountaineer Miles".

Mercer County Public Schools Central Office staff enjoyed a wonderful evening together at our annual picnic at Glenwood Park. While we may not have taken many pictures, that's because everyone was too busy enjoying great food, great conversations, and even better company!
A special thank you to Tyler and Emma, children of our Purchasing Director, Lindsey Lucas, for stepping in as our official photographers' models for the evening. They were absolutely convinced that Superintendent Toman was once a WWE wrestler—and after seeing some of his poses, we're not entirely sure they've been convinced otherwise! 😂
Events like these remind us that a positive workplace culture is built on relationships, laughter, and time spent together. We are grateful for this amazing team and all they do for the students, staff, and families of Mercer County.
💙 One Team. One Mission. One Mercer County. 💙

Thanks to the support of our voters, important facility improvements are taking place across the county, including the refinishing of the gymnasium floor at PikeView Middle School and roofing projects at Bluefield High School.
These are just a few examples of how Excess Levy funds help Mercer County Public Schools maintain safe, functional, and welcoming learning environments. From building repairs and maintenance to infrastructure improvements, the Excess Levy allows us to care for the facilities where our students learn, grow, and succeed every day.
Thank you for investing in our schools and our future! #MercerCountySchools #ExcessLevyAtWork #InvestingInStudents #MCPSProud

📣 Mercer County Proud! 🥎
Yesterday, Superintendent Edward Toman and Assistant Superintendent Rosemary Mitchell traveled to South Charleston to cheer on the PikeView High School softball team as they competed in the 2026 WVSSAC State Softball Tournament at Little Creek Park.
The Panthers have battled their way to the state tournament and are among the top teams in West Virginia, earning their place on the state's biggest stage. Today, they take the field again as they continue their pursuit of a state championship. They will face the winner of the John Marshall v. Keyser game happening now. If the Panthers win that game, they will play again this evening at approximately 8:00 p.m.
We are incredibly proud of these student-athletes, coaches, and families for representing Mercer County with determination, sportsmanship, and Panther pride. Join us in wishing PikeView the very best this afternoon!
🥎 Good luck, Panthers! Bring home a championship! 💙🐾
