Message from Bonnie Allen, RN Administrator Mercer County Health Department: West Virginia is facing a possible triple threat this fall as COVID, flu and RSV are expected to hit their peak. Hospitals and emergency services may be overwhelmed with patients, so it is important to remember to only contact emergency medical services if you are having life-threatening symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or confusion. While there is no available vaccine for RSV, getting vaccinated against COVID and flu is the best way to protect yourself from getting sick. You can schedule a vaccine through Mercer County Health Department. All 3 of these viruses is spread through moisture droplets that are too small to see. Coughing and sneezing spread these droplets further than just regular breathing or talking. Reminding children to cover their mouth when they cough and to wash their hands often can help some.
