3rd Graders at Montcalm Elementary with BSU and Concord's mascots on Dictionary Day

MONTCALM, WV — Mercer County Public Schools celebrated Dictionary Day today at Montcalm Elementary School, continuing a beloved annual tradition that brings community partners and education together in support of young learners.

Each year, Concord University, Bluefield State University, New River Community and Technical College, and the Princeton Rotary Club collaborate to provide every third grader in Mercer County with a personal dictionary; a gift designed to inspire a lifelong love of words and learning. This year, Montcalm Elementary had the honor of hosting the countywide celebration.

During the ceremony, Dr. Ernie Adkins, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools, welcomed guests and students. Representing the entire class of Mercer County third graders, Jackson McDuffee and Journey Williams, both students at Montcalm Elementary, proudly accepted the dictionaries on behalf of their peers.

Distinguished guests included Dr. Bethany Meighen, President of Concord University; Mr. Keith Olson, Director of Communications at Bluefield State University; Ms. Marsha Hicks, Interim Coordinator at New River Community and Technical College; and Mr. Samuel Lusk, representative of the Princeton Rotary Club.

Adding excitement to the celebration, students were treated to surprise appearances by Concord University’s mascot, Roar, and Bluefield State University’s mascot, Blue, who brought plenty of smiles and photo opportunities for the young learners.

“This event is a perfect example of how partnerships between our schools, higher education institutions, and community organizations can make learning exciting and meaningful,” said Dr. Adkins.

Mercer County Public Schools extends its sincere gratitude to all sponsors and participants for continuing this tradition of literacy and community connection.
