Basic and Optional Life Insurance

Active members receive basic term life insurance ($10,000) at no cost and may purchase optional life insurance coverage with pre-tax earnings through MetLife (payroll deductions).

To enroll for Basic life insurance, the employee can elect to enroll online at www.wvpeia.com and select "Manage My Benefits" or by completing and signing a Basic Life Insurance Enrollment Form. The Benefit Coordinator completes the Agency Section at the bottom of the form and sends it to PEIA. By signing this form, the Benefit Coordinator verifies that the employee meets all eligibility requirements and qualifies for benefits.

To enroll in Optional life insurance, the employee can elect to enroll for coverage online at www.wvpeia.com and select "Manage My Benefits" or by completing and signing an Optional Life Insurance Enrollment Form. The Benefit Coordinator completes the Agency Section at the bottom of the form and sends it to PEIA. By signing this form, the Benefit Coordinator verifies that the employee meets all eligibility requirements and qualifies for benefits.

Any enrollment and/or changes to PEIA benefits can be made by going online to "Manage My Benefits" at www.peia.com or by contacting MCBOE PEIA Benefit Coordinator.

Medical Insurance

Eligible employees have the option to choose between four medical insurance plans from PEIA (Public Employees Insurance Agency). Details of each are found here.

Dental Insurance

All active employees are eligible to receive basic dental insurance coverage at no premium charge (long-term substitutes excluded).

  • Bento Dental is the provider for employees and their eligible dependents: spouse, children up to the month they turn 26 years, and children who are physically or mentally unable to be (self-supporting). 

  • Maximum coverage: $1,000/fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) per dependent.

  • $750 lifetime coverage of orthodontics per eligible dependent.

  • Only “active” employees are eligible (substitutes are excluded)

Optical Reimbursement

  • Optical reimbursement is provided by Mercer County Schools to employees and their eligible dependents: spouse, non-college children up to the age of 19 years, full time college unmarried students up to the month after turning 23 years old or college graduation whichever comes first, and children who are physically or mentally unable to be (self-supporting). 

  • Student verification forms must completed annually upon child turning age 19.

  • $100 per eligible dependent/year.  Maximum of $200.00.

  • Coverage is based on a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

  • “Employee” must sign Optical Claim Form.

  • Employee reimbursement – statement/receipts must show patients name, date of service, services provided, amount paid, and proof of payment.

  • Most local optometrists and optical businesses will bill the Board.

  • Only “active” employees are eligible (substitutes excluded).

Mountaineer Flexible Benefits

Mountaineer Flexible Benefits are available to all active employees seeking additional/supplemental coverage.

New Employees are eligible for enrollment on month of hire and next 60 days; otherwise employees can only enroll or make changes during “Open Enrollment” in April.

Premiums are deducted from 20 pay periods before taxes.
