PRINCETON, WV – On Friday, February 20, students and staff at Mercer Elementary School will be wearing red in a powerful show of support for public education across West Virginia.

As part of a statewide effort to celebrate and advocate for public schools, Mercer Elementary — proudly known as “Pirate Nation” — is joining educators, families, and communities in recognizing the vital role public education plays in shaping the future.

Wearing red is more than a dress-up day. It is a visible reminder of the commitment educators make each day to serve students academically, socially, and emotionally. Public schools are the heart of our communities — providing opportunity, stability, and a safe place for children to learn, grow, and dream big.

“At Mercer Elementary, we believe in the power of public education to change lives,” said Principal Dr. Shellie Simpson. “When our Pirates wear red, we are standing together in support of our students, our teachers, and the bright futures we are building every single day.”

Mercer Elementary is known for its strong school culture, community partnerships, and focus on student growth and achievement. From academic excellence to character development and Pirate Pride celebrations, the school continues to demonstrate what makes public education so impactful.

Families and community members are encouraged to join the celebration by wearing red on Friday and sharing messages of support for public schools.

Because at Mercer Elementary — and across West Virginia — public education matters.
