So, your child is in fifth grade at Bluewell Elementary School, which means middle school is quickly approaching.  Rightfully so, you may be a little bit nervous for this transition.  So, here are a few things you can do to help your child with moving up.

Children typically begin to understand the importance of education during the middle school years.  During this educational phase, they will learn various facts, but also how those facts carry over into real life.

Before I begin how to prepare your child for the academic aspects of middle school, there is a very simple (but crucial) thing to do to help comfort your child.  You must allow them to practice with a combination lock.  The last thing you want to happen is for your child to panic and forget how to open his or her locker.  So, purchase a small lock in order to practice how to open a combination.

Now, on to academics!  In order to prepare for sixth grade language arts, allow them to read nonfiction history books and biographies.  Also, explain what footnotes and bibliographies are, so they know how to use them appropriately.  Finally, allow them opportunities to speak to other people, even if it makes them uncomfortable at first.  Then, it will be easier for them to conduct interviews for research.

To prepare for science and math, make sure students are comfortable with computers.  I know…sounds funny during this day and age, right? More specifically, make sure your kids can use computers for calculations.  In addition, they will learn all about scientific notation, more complicated word problems, probability, statistics, and percentages.

Finally, in history and social studies, students must become closely engaged with primary documents.  For example, they may need to get information directly from the Constitution.  Of course, they must also consider world events through various perspectives, complete current event assignments, and perform community service.  So, make sure your children know how they can make a difference, and be sure they have a basic knowledge of world events.

We will always support our Bluewell Bears, no matter how old they are.  So, families, we are forever here for you, so please reach out whenever needed!
