It’s appropriate to say that the pandemic caused extra stress and hardships on most (if not all) of us.  This includes our children.  Therefore, teachers are just one of the heroes working to shift our society back to some sort of normalcy.

Students face all sorts of trauma.  None of us can undo painful experiences, but our teachers are dedicated to building their knowledge and resilience in spite of their ordeals.

First, Bluewell School teachers know that (often times) they must look beyond a student’s behavior.  Trauma affects children socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically.  Therefore, stress makes kids angry, depressed, uncooperative, or distracted.

So, our teachers build positive relationships with our students.  Rich relationships with teachers help traumatized children build resiliency.  Our teachers get to know their students, so they can better help them in the classroom and in life.

In addition to building positive relationships, Bluewell School teachers create a safe environment.  Children must feel secure and connected to the adults and their friends in order to learn.  Teachers are pivotal at reassuring students and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Next, teachers must meet students where they are.  Children need to feel settled in the classroom after a tragedy, and this may require special accommodations.  For example, if a student is cranky and disruptive in the morning because he does not have a regular bedtime, then his teacher may designate a “safe place” for him.  So, the student can use this area to calm down and de-stress.  It makes a world of difference!

Finally, a very important trait of a great teacher is to be predictable.  If a child had a traumatic experience, then she may feel out of control.  Therefore, a predictable classroom routine provides a sense of stability and calmness.

We are so thankful for the great teachers at Bluewell School.  They love and care for your children daily, and we are proud of our Bluewell School family!
