Happy President's Day! Today, we celebrate everyone who served in the office of president of the United States.
Specifically, it honors George Washington, who was the first president of the United States. A food traditionally associated with President’s Day is cherry pie, because (according to legend) a young Washington chopped down a cherry tree.
Businesses used to close on President’s Day; however, times have changed. Now, most businesses remain open, but you may find sales and other promotions.
On the other hand, federal and state government services still close, such as the U.S. Postal Service, state Departments of Motor Vehicles, and federal and state courts. Some school systems close, as well. Of course, Mercer County Schools were in session today, but we have a 2-hour early dismissal.
President’s Day has been an American holiday for almost 140 years. Therefore, as our Bluewell School students learn more about our presidents today, we are thankful for our country.
