The State Superintendent of Schools releases report cards or reports illustrating the state of education in West Virginia. The report cards provide information needed for counties to evaluate annual progress. Before this evaluation can be accomplished, counties must first compare where they are now with where they were when the previous report card was issued.

Athens Elementary Honored by Governor

  • October 30, 2019 – West Virginia Governor Jim Justice visited Athens School today to present students and staff a certificate for their outstanding achievement on the West Virginia Balanced Scorecard. In speaking with students prior to the program, he encouraged students to see their dreams, to never lose their passion, and to absolutely believe. He reminded them that they can achieve. He said, you are all blessed, talented. Just believe. If I can come from where I did and become governor, you can be anything too.

Principal Shelley Weiss introduced Dr. Deborah Akers, Superintendent, who welcomed West Virginia Governor Jim Justice to Athens Elementary. The governor talked to the students about their accomplishments. He explained to them that you have done something on the Balanced Scorecard that very few have done. He told them that of the five (5) measured categories on the scorecard, Athens’ students exceeded standards in demonstrating progress in Math and met standards in performance of English Language Arts (ELA), in performance on Math, and in showing progress in ELA. Governor Justice challenged the students to keep working hard and explained that next year they could meet achievement standards in all five categories if they just believe they could do it. He said, in West Virginia, I know we have to get better, but we are trying.

Following the recognition program at Athens Elementary today, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice took time to talk to students and pose for photographs.

    Congratulations Athens Elementary!
