Community Eligibility Provision for School Meal Program

During the 2017-18 school year, Mercer County Schools is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of USDA’s National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program. This means that ALL Mercer County students are receiving breakfast and lunch at no charge (Free).

Breakfast serves at least four (4) items per day including a main entrée, juice, fresh fruit or fruit cup, and milk. Since breakfast is an offer versus serve meal, students may choose all four (4) items on the menu, or they may choose at least three (3) out of the four (4) items served. Mercer County Schools participates in two (2) types of breakfast initiatives. The first is breakfast in the classroom where breakfast is taken and served in the classroom. The second is a grab and go breakfast where students walk through the breakfast line and choose from the options available.

Every day MCS serves at least five (5) different components for lunch including a meat/meat alternative (Main Entrée); a vegetable, a fruit, a grain, and a milk product. At lunch, students may choose all available meal components; however, they must choose at least three (3) out of the five (5) components. Students may receive unlimited quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The biggest “perk” of this program is that all students have the opportunity to be served two (2) meals each day at no cost. During this month where most stop to remember all the reasons we are thankful, please remember this wonderful opportunity available to and for all Mercer County School students.
