Mercer County Schools Honors RetireesĀ

PRINCETON, WV, May 31, 2016:   In a banquet tonight at the Chuck Mathena Center, Mercer County Schools honored the 2016 retirees.  These individuals represent another large retirement class.  Since this time last year, 64 individuals – 40 professional and 24 service - have retired from our classrooms, hallways, buses, kitchens, offices, and maintenance shops.  Collectively, they have given over 1,648.7 years of service to Mercer County Schools.  Of those present this evening, Mr. Garry Taylor is credited with the most professional years of service, 42 years.  The second individual with the most years - thirty-nine (39) – is service employee, Michael Tilley.     For the evening, Mr. Rick Ball, Assistant Superintendent, served as Master of Ceremonies.  Mr. Todd Browning, Director of Special Education, and Mrs. Angela Groseclose, Secondary Supervisor, read narratives illustrating highlights for each retiree present.   Prior to awarding each retiree, in attendance, with a small token of appreciation for his or her years of service, Dr. Deborah Akers addressed the attendees.  She said, “For most of you this evening, you have said that you hope to define retirement in the months and years ahead with traveling, spending time with family, or babysitting grandchildren.  In reality, it doesn’t really matter how the dictionary defines “retirement” because you now will be able to write your own definition based on your hopes, your dreams.”

This event would not be possible without the support of local sponsors.  To make this evening a success, the following businesses made donations:  AAA Paving and Sealing, Inc., American Electric Power, Bluefield Office Products, Douglas Equipment, Ferguson Enterprises, Inc., Hearthside Books, Komax Business Systems, Lowe’s of Princeton, Main Street Builders, Multi-Fresh, Inc., Ramey Ford, Spartan Sporting Goods, Inc. Stafford Consultants, Swope Construction Company, and Western Branch Diesel.
