Buckland Named Mercer County 2017 Teacher of the Year

PRINCETON, WV, May 2, 2016: Mercer County’s 52nd Teacher of the Year could have been any one of the 26 school honorees recognized at the district’s annual banquet on May 2nd. “To be selected as your school’s Teacher of the Year is a great honor and accomplishment,” said Superintendent Deborah Akers in her welcoming remarks.
“When I look around the room tonight,” Akers said, “I see teachers who have distinguished themselves in the profession. This evening, we are here to celebrate your accomplishments.”

This year, the selection committee reviewed the nominations and interviewed the top three candidates. Mercer County Schools is proud to introduce Mrs. Robin Buckland of Montcalm High School as their 2017 Teacher of the Year. Robin has taught Math in MCS for thirty (30) years, with all but two months teaching at Montcalm High School. Buckland says that after thirty years she still “gets excited” and still has “a passion” for teaching. She also says it is the “small success of her students” that still thrills her each and every day. Additionally, she feels responsible for every student she teachers – responsible for their learning as well as their desire to learn. Her advice to new teachers or students considering the teaching profession is to never stop learning – to always keep your skills and knowledgebase current in order to maintain your thirst or desire to teach.

Buckland will now represent Mercer County in the state competition. The 2017 West Virginia Teacher of the year is scheduled to be chosen in September of this year.

Mistresses of ceremonies for the event were Mrs. Brenda Thompson, 2016 Teacher of the Year and Dr. Ashley Vaughn, Coordinator II, Central Office. Prior to the event, Steve Comer, former Principal of Glenwood School, entertained the guest with an array of piano solos.
