MCTEC Showcases State Champions

On April 10th and 11th, fourteen students and eleven advisors from the Mercer County Technical Education Center attended the SkillsUSA West Virginia State Leadership & Skills Conference in Kingwood, WV. The students competed against other SkillsUSA members from across the state in various skills and leadership contests.

Addressing the students at the first general session were West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Martirano and National SkillsUSA Executive Director Timothy Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence hails from Mercer County and is a former graduate of MCTEC’s welding program.

MCTEC was one of only three SkillsUSA chapters in the state to receive the Chapter Excellence Program Quality Chapter Award. The Chapter Excellence Program honors chapter achievement and structure relative to SkillsUSA’s framework of developing personal, workplace, and technical skills. MCTEC also received the second highest award given to a West Virginia chapter in being named a Silver Level Chapter of Distinction.

The student delegation from MCTEC included Nathaniel Catron, Jessica Devor, Colton Egnor, James Harman, Joshua Holbrook, Keenan Jenkins, Brooklynn Lilly, Samantha McMillion, Marty Perdue, Colton Plumley, David Reidmiller, Renee Shrader, Joseph Soucy, and Chantelle Willis.
