PikeView High 2017 Academic Bowl Champions

PRINCETON, WV, December 2, 2016:   On Thursday, December 1, 2016, Mercer County Schools hosted the Championship Match of the 2016-2017 Academic Bowl in the auditorium at PikeView High School.  Due to a three-way tie, the evening began with a quarter-final match between Montcalm High (MHS) and PikeView High (PVHS).   PikeView High moved on to face Bluefield High (BHS) in a semi-final match. 

Mercer County Social Studies Fair

Mercer County students from seventeen elementary and middle schools competed on November 7, 2016, for coveted Mercer County Social Studies Fair medals. The event drew hundreds of people to the Mercer Mall, where students set up their displays and presented their “speeches” to pairs of judges.  Parents and hopeful students crowded the center court for the 1:00 awards ceremony.   

Mercer County Reading Bee

The Mercer County Reading Bee was held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at Bluefield State College.  The overall winner was Melrose Elementary School.  The runner up team was from Brushfork Elementary School.  Brushfork Elementary School won the Reader’s Theatre category, Melrose Elementary and Glenwood School tied for the win in the Comprehension category, Melrose Elementary School won the Reading Skills category, and Glenwood School won the Vocabulary category.

Princeton, WV, November 22, 2016:  At the regular Mercer County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, new member Mrs. Jacinda Santon Smith was sworn in by Mercer County Schools’ Superintendent, Dr. Deborah S. Akers.
