• Progress Report



PRINCETON, WV, October 10, 2019:

 The State Superintendent of Schools releases report cards or reports illustrating the state of education in West Virginia. The report cards provide information needed for counties to evaluate annual progress. Before this evaluation can be accomplished, counties must first compare where they are now with where they were when the previous report card was issued.

During the 2018 – 2019 school year, twenty-one (21) schools participated in state testing. Elementary and middle school students took the General Summative Assessment while high school students took the SAT. The SAT is a terrific tool which measures how prepared students are for college. Post-Secondary Achievement is one of the measurements of progress on the state education report card which measures student college and career readiness at the high school level. It is also a category in which Mercer County a Schools takes great pride. While the state averaged approximately 64% in this category, MCS averaged 80% in the Post-Secondary Achievement category. Additionally, county students on track to graduate with their class, ranked five (5) percent above the state average. 

Improvements in academic areas were also achieved. For example, twenty (20) of the twenty-one (21) schools tested demonstrated progress in mathematics. The data taken from the report card shows that MCS students scored approximately nine (9) percent above the state in the area of students progressing in math. In seventeen (17) of the schools tested, progress or improvements in math were evaluated, and of those seventeen (17) schools evaluated, fourteen (14) or eighty-two (82) percent were above the state average in showing growth. Furthermore, data also shows that in academic performance in math, MCS students ranked approximately one (1) percent above the state average.

In Language Arts multiple schools in Mercer County showed progress as well. Student scores increased in fourteen (14) of the twenty-one (21) schools tested. In the category of students showing progress, the state report card ranks MCS students at approximately one (1) percent above the state average; however, in the area of academic performance in Language Arts, MCS students scored about one (1) percent below the state average.  

Even though students in Mercer County exhibited growth, many new programs and strategies are being used this year by schools to help students continue progressing. Additionally, interventional strategies and programs, technology programs, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities are being implemented to help students excel. Teacher trainings in areas where students need to increase knowledge and performance are also being reviewed and implemented. While students demonstrated the highest growth in math, MCS continues to strive to improve. In Language Arts, a concerted effort to improve is being made through a focus on reading, vocabulary and writing in all areas of the curriculum. During the 2019-2020 school year, Mercer County Schools will explore additional programming opportunities, strategies, and methods which will help students grow and progress in all areas of the curriculum.
