COUNTY ADJUSTS CALENDAR TO RECOUP LOST INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

PRINCETON, WV, MARCH 16, 2011:    Although WV state law prevents counties from lengthening the year for employees, adjustments to the school calendar will allow Mercer County students and teachers to recover all but five of the days missed because of bad weather.

Mercer County School administrators have announced that all six of the Outside School Environment (OS) Days scheduled in March and April have now been converted to regular instructional days.  Likewise, the Continuing Education Day on May 6th has also been changed to an instructional day.

Instructional Support (IS) Days slated for April 4 and June 8 will now be instructional days with 2-hour early dismissal for faculty meetings.

Superintendent Deborah Akers said that the county deliberately placed seven of the non-instructional days after March 1.  “We do this intentionally so we have options when winter weather results in frequent school closures.”

According Akers, the county is exercising its prerogative to make alterations in order to provide as much instructional time as possible. “We cannot by law lengthen the school year, however.   The last day for pupils remains June 8, with 10-month employees reporting for their last day on June 9.”
