SkillsUSA members at Mercer County Technical Education Center are celebrating SkillsUSA Week on February 9-13, 2015 in conjunction with National Career and Technical Education Month.

Montcalm High School junior Autum Rose is the president of the SkillsUSA Chapter at MCTEC, where approximately 600 students are active in SkillsUSA. Other Chapter Officers Include Bryson Murphy (Secondary Vice-President), Orrin Gerzema (Post-secondary Vice-President), Kimberly Walton (Secretary), Tyler Poe (Treasurer), Brooklynn Lilly (Reporter), and Joseph Soucy (Parliamentarian). Students at MCTEC will be celebrating SkillsUSA Week and CTE month with activities that include inviting industry professionals into their classrooms as guest speakers and having a door décorating contest between each program that focuses on SkillsUSA's 2015 theme of "50 Years of Champions at Work."

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations in high schools and college/technical schools. MCTEC has active SkillsUSA members enrolled in Automotive Technology, Careers in Education, Carpentry, Collision Repair Technology, Computer Systems Repair Technology, Cosmetology, Dental Assisting, Drafting, Graphic Design, Machine Tool Technology, Marketing Management, Masonry, Project Lead the Way, Project STRIVE, Therapeutic Services, and Welding. Students in these programs recently competed in local competitions and a team of competitors will be representing MCTEC and Mercer County Schools at the SkillsUSA West Virginia Leadership & Skills Conference in April in Kingwood, WV.


SkillsUSA has more than 350,000 members annually, organized into 13,000 chapters and 54 state and territorial associations (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands). SkillsUSA’s goal is to prepare America’s high performance workers. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills, and it emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities.
