Other Health Impaired


Other Health Impaired is defined by having limited strength, vitality or alertness, including heightened alertness to environmental stimuli that result in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment that is due to chronic or acute health problems. These problems may include, but are not limited to, asthma, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, Tourette syndrome, and stroke to such a degree that it affects the student’s educational performance.


Documentation of all of the following criteria must exist:

  1. The student must exhibit characteristics that are consistent with the definition

  2. The student has a chronic or acute medical/health condition as diagnosed by a licensed physician

  3. The medical or health condition affects their education needs

  4. The students condition adversely affects their educational performance

  5. The student needs special education

Strategies for School:

  • Modify assignments

  • Cue students to obtain attention

  • Provide clear and limited directions

  • Assist students when making transitions

  • Use a variety of teaching strategies

Strategies for Home:

  • Check child’s progress

  • Provide supportive home learning environment

  • Create a schedule at home for child to follow

  • Give corrective feedback

  • Give positive reinforcement
